Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, known in Japan as 星のカービィ64 Hoshi no Kirby 64 (Kirby of the Stars 64), is a Nintendo 64 platform game developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, a sequel to Kirby's Dream Land 3, and one of few Kirby titles not directed by Masahiro Sakurai who voiced King Dedede in the game, and where Meta Knight never appears.
As was the case in the official Wii Virtual Console release, there is no support for the original Nintendo 64 release's Rumble Pak functionality, even when emulating or connecting a GameCube controller.
Audio is completely garbled with OpenAL, use any other. Refer issue 10704. Cubeb is default since 5.0-10192
On both backends, some textures in the cutscenes (e.g. the skybox during the New Game intro) will have a pixel stretch effect that corresponds to the cutscene camera movement. Changing the External Frame Buffer to "Real" seems to fix this. Fixed with Hybrid XFB in 5.0-5874.
Cutscene borders have large artifacts at the bottom. Fixed by an unknown revision prior to 5.0-6004.
No configuration changes are known to affect compatibility for this title.
The graph below charts the compatibility with Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards since Dolphin's 2.0 release, listing revisions only where a compatibility change occurred.

Test Entries | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Revision | OS | CPU | GPU | Result | Tester |
4.0-3260 | Windows 7 | AMD Phenom II X4 955 | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 | Minor graphic and audio problems. Cutscene borders are slightly glitchy and audio skips intermittently. | Net_Bastard |
4.0-3471 | Windows 7 | AMD Phenom II X4 955 | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 | Minor graphic and audio problems. Still very playable and better than an actual N64 emulator. | Net_Bastard |
5.0-6004 | Windows 10 | Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 | Didn't play extensively, but only remaining issue seems to be with OpenAL audio. | Kolano |
